Not all UGC video ads are the same format. The style of the video, how the creator opens, how the product is introduced, and how the ad ends, all vary in ways that affect performance. For Shopify brands running Meta and TikTok ads, five formats have proven to convert consistently in 2026.
1. Problem-solution
The creator opens by naming a frustration the target audience has, then reveals the product as the fix. This is the highest converting format for most physical products because it immediately qualifies the viewer and answers the implicit question "is this for me?"
Best for: skincare, supplements, home products, tools, anything that solves a clear pain.
Hook example: "I have been dealing with this for two years and nothing actually worked until I found this."
2. Testimonial-style
The creator speaks directly to camera as if recommending the product to a friend. The most authentic feeling format when done well, and the hardest to fake convincingly. Works because it triggers the same mental shortcut as a personal recommendation.
Best for: beauty, wellness, supplements, anything where trust drives the purchase.
Hook example: "Okay I need to talk about this because I have recommended it to five people this week."
3. Demo or how-it-works
Shows the product in use. No complicated setup, no elaborate storyline. Just the creator using the product naturally, with commentary on what they are doing and why it works.
Best for: kitchen products, tools, gadgets, fitness gear, anything where seeing it in action answers the key objection.
Hook example: "Watch how this actually works because I did not believe it until I tried it."
4. Comparison or "I switched from X to Y"
The creator frames the product as a better alternative to something the viewer is already using or aware of. Creates immediate context and positions the product without needing to explain the category.
Best for: products in established categories where the main job is switching, supplements vs alternatives, skincare routines, productivity tools.
Hook example: "I have been using the same product for three years and I finally switched, here is what changed."
5. Day-in-the-life
Shows the product as part of a routine rather than as a standalone thing. The most aspirational format. Works because it lets the viewer imagine themselves using it, rather than evaluating the product in isolation.
Best for: lifestyle products, fashion, accessories, beauty routines, anything where the context of use is part of the appeal.
Hook example: Open mid-routine, product on screen. "My morning looks like this now and I genuinely look forward to it."
How to test formats without wasting budget
Do not test all five at once with five completely different scripts. Test one format change at a time with the same core message. Keep the product claim and the call to action identical across tests, and change only the format and hook. That way the data tells you which format your audience responds to, not which combination happened to work.
At TR Digital our Growth plan (three ads, $240) is built around testing three different formats in one order. See pricing or the Shopify AI UGC page for more.
